A used car can be a great deal, or an expensive lesson. Taking an hour to check the car properly protects your money. Here is a simple checklist you can follow with any seller.
1. Start with the papers
- Ask to see the ownership and import documents before you pay anything.
- Check that the chassis (VIN) number on the papers matches the number on the car.
- Make sure the seller's name matches the documents.
2. Walk around the car
- Look for paint that does not match between panels, or uneven gaps. These can point to past accidents.
- Check for rust, especially under the doors and around the wheels.
- Look at the tyres. Uneven wear can mean alignment or suspension problems.
- Test all the lights and the horn.
3. Check inside and under the bonnet
- Switch the car on and watch the dashboard. Warning lights should go off after a few seconds.
- Make sure the air conditioner blows cold, and that windows, locks and the screen work.
- Look for oil or fluid leaks under the engine, and listen for knocking or unusual noises.
4. Take a proper test drive
- Gears should shift smoothly, with no jerking.
- The car should brake in a straight line and the steering should feel firm and centred.
- Drive over a few bumps and listen for knocking from the suspension.
5. Bring a mechanic and compare prices
If you can, have an independent mechanic inspect the car before you pay. Then compare the price with similar cars. A price that is much lower than the rest of the market is a warning sign, not a bargain.
