Local, tokunbo or auction: which is right for you?

Three ways to buy a car in Nigeria, compared simply by speed, choice and cost.

Most buyers choose between three routes: a car already in Nigeria, a foreign-used (tokunbo) car, or a car bought from a US auction. Each one suits a different budget and timeline.

Cars already in Nigeria

  • Fastest: you can see it, drive it and often take it the same day.
  • Already cleared, so there are no shipping or port costs to wait for.
  • The choice is limited to what is available locally.

Foreign-used (tokunbo) imports

  • A wider choice of makes, models and years.
  • Often lower mileage than similar local cars.
  • Priced to include import costs, so check what is covered.

Auction cars from Copart and IAA

  • The widest choice, and often the lowest purchase price.
  • Takes longer: usually 4 to 8 weeks from winning the bid to Lagos.
  • You choose from photos and listing details, so it helps to have someone review the car for you.

How to decide

If you need a car this week, buy local. If you want a specific model or a better price and can wait, imports and auctions give you more room. Tell us your budget and timeline and we will point you to the right route.
